Allah does not grant love of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) to everyone. It’s a special bounty that Allah bestows on whosever He pleases. Sincere love for Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) – which includes hatred for his enemies and usurpers – is a sign of pure birth.

  1. Pure birth is basis of love for Aal Muhammad (a.s.)
  2. There are many traditions on the subject – we reproduce some over here as reference:

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) informs – One who finds the coolness of our love in his heart then he must thank Allah for the foremost bounty. I asked – What is the foremost bounty? He (a.s.) – Pure birth.

Mufazzal Ibn Umar relates from Imam Sadiq (a.s.) – One who finds the coolness of love for Ali (a.s.) in his heart, must pray excessively for his mother, for she did not cheat on his father.

Ibn Abbas narrates – I saw Jabir Ibn Abdullah al-Ansari leaning on his staff and circling the streets of the Ansar and visiting their assemblies while declaring – …O Ansar, cultivate the love of Ali (a.s.) in your children and if the child rejects it, then look at his mother.

Abu Hurairah narrates – I heard the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) inform Ali (a.s.) – I, you, Fatima, Hasan and Husain (peace be upon them all) are created from a single clay. There was excess clay from which our Shias and lovers have been created. When the Day of Judgment dawns, the people will be summoned by the names of their mothers except us and our Shias and our lovers, surely they will be summoned by the names of their parents.

  3. Pure birth is the greatest bounty

In a lengthy tradition Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) declares: …Allah selects out of His mercy whomsoever He pleases. Then thank Allah for selecting you for some of the most manifest of bounties – which is pure birth (which leads to our love and mastership).

  • Behaar al-Anwaar v 10 p 103, v 65 p 61

Clearly, love of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) and his infallible sons (a.s.) is a divinely bestowed bounty that begins with pure birth. Going by traditions, those who do not find love of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) in their hearts or find love of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) along with love of his rivals have been deprived of this bounty.
